Morrow understands that, although
mosquitoes are a part of a natural and healthy ecosystem, there are
certain circumstances under which management measures are warranted.
Human health concerns and excessive annoyance are two such instances.
Morrow has been conducting Nuisance
Management programs in BC for twenty years.
With the expected arrival of West Nile Virus (WNV) to British Columbia
this year, Morrow is working with numerous communities and regional
districts developing WNV Programs.
The programs involve preparing action plans including mapping, surveillance,
control, and public relations/education relating to mosquitoes and
WVN.
When reduction of specific mosquito populations is required, Morrow
believes that measures taken should be as specific to the target species
as possible and not negatively affect other species in the ecosystem.
In this regard, Morrow favours natural control methods whenever feasible.
Morrow believe that control of mosquitoes in their larval stage is
most appropriate as they are most concentrated at this stage and are
susceptible to targeted biological control measures. Morrow use a
biological mosquito larvicide, Aquabac,
for this purpose.
Morrow does not endorse the control of adult mosquitoes by fogging
with chemicals, such as organophosphates due to their tendency to
persist in the environment for prolonged periods. Under extreme circumstances
fogging with naturally derived compounds such as pyrethrins may be
warranted, but is avoided due to the indiscriminate nature of this
method.
